The Progression of Abandonment
The Progression of Abandonment
This is the progression of abandonment as far as I know it to be. You give up External Desires (Your expectations) for desiring Jesus for Jesus only. You give up desiring Jesus only (your preference) to be filled with his Desires. You cannot be filled with His desires until you are completely emptied of your own. No matter how well intentioned they are. We cannot desire with pure motive. We must be emptied and filled with His desires. You then give up your sight (your perception) for trusting in Him completely. There comes a time and a place in proximity to the Lord that the purity of Him and you and the relationship go beyond what the mind and eyes can comprehend or explain without soiling it with merely human and carnal thoughts. Even the imagination is limited and flawed. There comes a time and a place where you must sit still, be quiet, and cover your eyes. He becomes your sight. He must. It is a total yielding of trust to the Lord. I think of this space as something similar to the proximity that the seraphim enjoy even now. The Lord dwells in inapproachable light. It is both a mercy and an invitation. A mercy because if we could see the purity of him and the relationship we have with him then we would begin to pick it apart or be tempted to take advantage of it since we have the knowledge of good and evil. or it would make our head explode. or it would be beauteous and desirable even compared to the Lord himself. Whether dangerous or jealousy the Lord requires we cover our eyes for our own good at this stage. on this side of heaven, complete trust is required at this proximity to our Lord. This is the closest we can get to Him on this side of paradise. it is also an invitation to trust him completely. the Lord loved us blindly. he died for people that may never even choose him. For some humans he died for, he died for merely a chance and did not get a return on his investment. so we also have the great blessing of the invitation to completely take a chance and trust him. This stage is Abiding. It is a pocket to remain in. A target to keep in the sights. It does get easier with time, as we give up desires and expectations and preferences and even our perception daily. We learn the weight of our cross. we fellowship with him in his sufferings. we minister to his heart as he ministers to ours.
